Beginning Handbuilding

This class is an introduction to the basic methods of handbuilding with clay; specifically pinch, coil and slab. Through a variety of weekly projects, the novice student will explore construction and surface decoration, painting with underglazes and slips, carving with sgraffito, and glazing.

$200 for Roswell Residents, $300 for non-residents

Who is it for?

The novice student who is new to clay, handbuilding, or sculpture. The student who has been away for a few years or just wants to refine their basic techniques.

 

What you might make

Bowls, plates, cups, vases, pitchers, boxes, teapots, masks, birdhouses, birdbaths, wall art and whatever interests you!

What to expect

A welcoming, low stress atmosphere devoted to basic building and construction techniques that will help you develop the craftsmanship and confidence to pursue more advanced projects of your choosing. Each class starts with a demonstration of the week’s project, followed by a group discussion of interesting results fresh out of the kiln.


What to bring

Your hands and an open mind! Also, basic helpful tools (sold at Dick Blick or online): A fettling knife, a plastic rib for smoothing surfaces, a metal rib for smoothing hard edges, a needle tool, a small lidded container to start your own clay slip for building.
