Wood Firing
Train Kiln - 2022
Roswell Clay Collective will host the third firing of our recently constructed train-style kiln. These intense firings, fueled exclusively by burning wood, reach temperatures of over 2300 degrees and rely on ash and minerals from the burning wood to encourage natural, asymmetrical patterns on surfaces of clay forms. Depending on a variety of factors, wood firings at Art Center West require constant attention and wood stoking for 24 to 36 hours. The duration and physicality of the entire process from preparing wood, loading, firing, unloading, and cleaning, demands a unified and committed team - wood firings are great community builders! The firings require a slower pace and provide opportunities to share information about the diversity of processes used to create ceramic works at ACW and in our personal circles.
Initial firings served as educational and outreach opportunities for ACW staff and members of Roswell Clay Collective, and provided information about how the kiln operates and its potential effects Future firings will target the engagement of local potters, schools, and ceramics groups as public wood firings and workshops focusing on the train kiln begin to be offered in 2022.
